Okay. I've been using this wonderful X thingy here for a few years now, and
I've been throught a lot of windowmanagers .. mwm, twm, tvtwm, olwm, olvwm,
ctwm, amiwm, fvwm, fvwm2, and now my own hack for fvwm2 with a LOT of pixmaps
in it.. but it's not releasable material.. it's a realy bad hack, but hey..
it works, and is still relatively stable.. just the poor machies running it
have one hell of a bad day with ram.. pixmaps eat through it in a bad way...

Anyway.. I've been playing wiht X, and have coded some stuff. xflame, a simple
3d graphics engine with double-buffering, and a whole bunch of stupid hacks...
but now I'm serious. I'm getting my souped up Linux box in a few weeks and I've
got holidays and lots of time to kill... and Well here's the story:

To date windowmanagers have been good but never have quite done everything I
wanted them to do.. some had features I liked and others had other features I
liked, but no one manager had everything I wanted.. especially on the visual
side. So I've now decided to write a new window-manager. This time It's not
going to be based on twm or some other window-manager. It's going to be
written from the ground up. I've taken a look and elayed with some
experimental code naging child windows in a window with simple raise, lower,
resize and move .. pretty much all the important functions of a minowmanager
and it took only about 2 hours to code from scrach......

So what I want is people to give me their ideas/wants/needs for a
windowmanager. I think some ideas are important to begin with so I can design
it from scratch to accomodate this, without "hacking" it in later in an ad-hoc
fashion. Anyway.. for those interested here is the basic concept behind the
project:

This wm is NOT .. I repeat NOT going to be designed for low-RAM, low Speed
machines. It will run on them, and with some sensible user setting it could
run quite okay, but itis , in the main designed for those with RAM and CPU
to burn, and want an interface that looks & feels better than anything else
in existence.

The wm will be primarily based on Pixmaps (XPM's), using the wonderful
Shape extension and one hell of a lot of graphics (in this case, images)
and the interface will be customised merely by drawing your own or
replacing the XPM's with other ones. It will come with it's own Config prgram,
so no more long hours spent reading the manual-page and writing that elusive
rc file so it works just fine.. all done in a GUI with previews etc...

EVERY pixmap that is defined can also be animated (goodbye CPU!).. yes
animated.. by using a series of XPM's.. there will be a way of defining a
cutoff point (i.e when load goes above 1.5 etc.) when it won't animate, but
hey.. if your cpu is idel.. it may aswell be put to good use in making your
screen look good.

Every button to control windows will be a pixmap, with many states (mouse
over, mouse not over, selected), and window control buttons can not only be
along the top of the window but down the sides and along the bottom too...
all user configureable. Titles could be on the Top, or bottom of windows..
User's choice.

Of course all the usual features, such as Virtual Workspaces will be supported,
Autoraise, Autopoint options etc.

Every wanted Ivy leaves to traipse down the sides of your windows? Have vines
run along your windows, overlapping doth the window and the background? With
transparent parts? Every wanted to have the tops of your active window burn
with flames? Or have water drip down the sides of your active window? Have the
Window close button flash warning signs all over it if your mouse dare hover
over it? Well this is all planneL, and not too hard to do, but before half
the system admin guys jump up in arms at the thought of them needing to buy a
batallion of Alpha's just as Xterms... Dont'. I'm not writing this for you or
your users.. I'm writing this for the power user who has his own machine and
wants something better looking. Especially for all the Linux people out there
who have SVGA accelerated Cards that have a hell of a lot of gfx processing
power available to them...

It may be a while before I get it finished.. it's a long-term intense project,
and I hate releasing half-finished code.. I'm too much of a perfectionist
when it comes to graphics, but then all of you who have found the true power
of X can show what X can really do, and make the Macintrash/Windoze lovers
stare in wonder at an environment that just blows the user away...

And for those managing systems.. it'll be an interface that can be customised
more intensely than ny wm to date, and could be made quite intuitive and
easy-to-use for users on the system. The config program will aid in that even
more, allowing the non-UNIX literite to customise their environmant without
having to face the dreaded rc file (well it is dreaded for them..).

Anyway. even system admin guys won't find it too bad.. as long as the pixmaps
used are small , and animation is kept to a minimum, it'll be as lean as can
be... The full on capabilities are there for those that have the
resources to afford it.

So if you have any ideas, just post or mail them to me. I am all ears (well in
a few weeks once exams finish). I'll collect the input and see what can be done
and start working on it...

Enjoy your X.. because it doesn't get much better!
