encapsulated postscript

Please excuse if this has been covered before. I am wondering what is the
difference between postscript and encapsulated postscript? If I generate
a plot in S using the postscript() command, which of the two formats would
that be? Can I convert a postscript file to eps format?
I want to input my graph into scientific word, and when I tried doing so
with a postscript file generated by S, it said that this was not an encapsu-
lated postscript file, and it didn't work.
