I'm unsure as to whether to buy S+ or Gauss as my future
statistical environment. The basic reason for my uncertainty is that
I will usually be using whatever environment to estimate models for
which I am coding the likelihood function and (perhaps) its gradient.
Though I have not used either system in the past (so that learning
costs are constant, I assume), I know that Gauss can do what I want.
However, I have heard some wonderful things about S+ from
entry-level enthusiasts.
Can some expert out there please give me some advice as to the
adequacy (or even superlative fit) of S+ for the type of tasks I
will be encountering in my research? I really appreciate any
information you can give!
