In fact it is a marvelous idea. One which we take advantage of
all the time on our NeXTSTEP based workstations. There is a product
running under NeXTSTEP which is called "Taylor". Taylor does
exactly what you have been talking about: it converts arbitrary
postscript to editable objects and provides a WYSIWYG drawing
environment. It will also output the editable objects into some
other formats including Diagram format (which is what we primarily
use for editing the postscript).
Since StatSci has unfortunately decided to drop support for NeXTSTEP
computers, I have been reduced to NFS mounting Splus from an RS6000
in order to use it on my Pentium based NeXTSTEP machine. Even so,
I haven't seen a better environment for interacting with Splus.

Please oh please oh please support NeXTSTEP. You can support four
major machine architectures just by adding this your makefile:
CFLAGS= -arch i486 -arch m68k -arch hppa -arch sparc
Really. It just works. It would make so many people so happy. :^)
Just a command line version would be plenty. The NeXTSTEP
tools can do the rest.
