Sorry I got Bill Venables' name wrong in my last post, but I didn't expect
such a hot reply from Brian Ripley. Let me respond briefly to his note -
trying to be calm though I did not care for the 'ignorant comment'
reference.
Yes, Prof Ripley, I have read the back cover, and indeed have owned a copy
for all of one week - so perhaps I was a little hasty. But your quote
speaks to your intentions to address 'would-be users', while I was offering
personal opinion ('..seems aimed at those who are already deeply
conversant..') about the outcome.
To be specific, I've been trying to better understand ms() for describing
bimodal data, and found pp 242-3 to be quite difficult to follow - though I
did not start at the beginning.
On the other hand, page 51 on table() may be precisely the sort of example,
in relatively plain English WITH the result, which the original asker on
this net inquired about. Those interested in this thread might compare this
excellent example with what appears in Help; in my opinion, the V&R version
is far superior - especially for us 'newbies.'
And I do agree with the other poster, who pointed out the reasonable price.
