IMO, the most difficult problem is that S-plus is used by a wide range of people
in a wide range of fields with varying level of sophistication in both mathematics
and computers. Personally, I found the beginning manuals very helpful, but as I grew
more adept, I found the more advanced documentation lacked specific examples.
Most of my problems are in area of statistical finance. My approach when uncertain of
exactly what a funtion does is to take smaller samples and work them out in some other
manner and compare the results with S-plus. This is a tad cumbersome, but it works.
Ideally, what would be grand is an additional group of manuals (or more detailed help)
geared toward a specific discipline. IE(S for the Biologist, S for the Financial
Analyst, ETAL) These should be comprised of mostly examples.

AN ASIDE:
GWK0@NIOSR1.EM.CDC.GOV mentioned some manuals,
May I suggest my favorite(UNIX/C-SHELL), _The UNIX C SHELL FIELD GUIDE_,
Anderson and Anderson. It is published by Prentice-Hall.
