I think Mr. Barnett has missed the larger problem here. While S-plus is a
powerful environment, it is not very friendly for creating resampling
simulations. I have read and am aware of Efron's and Tibshirani's book.
However, when I have tried to create my own universes with resampling
procedures I have frequently found myself with severe memory limitations.
In addition, the time it takes for this interpreted language to perform a
simulation is often prohibitive even on a 486-33 pc clone. S-plus or this
user community should create the tools for exploring the resampling
procedures in S-plus. More importantly, it would be helpful if those in
this audience who are able provide examples of simulation code for the
creation of universes with resampling. Important questions of how likely
clustering occurs with such resampling procedures would be of particular
interest to me.
