This seems to be a pretty hot topic right now.
For those of us who feel that S-plus is a terrific statistical tool and is
well worth the effort it takes to learn it, but find that the manuals which
come with S-plus leave much to be desired in terms of organization and
clarity, can anyone suggest a well written intermediate level book on
S-plus, especially concerning data manipulation and modeling in S-plus. I'll
post the responses next Friday.
Personal tastes in various instructional books:
Good books: Mathematica (Wolfram)
SAS System for Linear Models (Littell/Freund)
UNIX for the Impatient (Abrahams/Larson)
OK books: most SAS manuals
S-plus Programmer's Manual
Less than OK: S-plus User's Guide
most UNIX manuals
I haven't decided on Statistical Models in S (Chambers/Hastie)
because I've only browsed through it, but I don't think I would rate it very
high. Perhaps there is an improved and updated edition to the copy I have.
