A few weeks ago, I asked about SPLUS-Oracle interaction.
I received several responses.
It turns out that the possibilities include installing the ODBC driver
when one is working with Splus for windows (Nick Ellis (also see Rose
O'Connor), Howard Brill, Jens Oehlschlaegel-Akiyoshi, Cheryl Howard),
going via SAS (Anona Thorne), HTML based work (Amara Graps) and direct
import of Oracle data by SPlus 5.1 for UNIX (Mette Langaas).

Huge thanks to all of you for sending me so much detailed information
in such a short time.

Best regards

At our site we have an Oracle database on a Solaris machine. I have an
ODBC driver installed on my Windows NT machine. I can query the database
through the ODBC driver. The ODBC driver can be used from various
applications like MS Access and Splus. From Splus (4.5 for Windows) you
click on File | Import Data... | From ODBC connection. Ask an administrator
to set up the ODBC driver for you.

The only problem is that with SPlus it is not dynamic. ie a copy of the
data is imported, changes are not reflected in the database. Also if
the database tables change a new copy needs to be imported.

I've done this using SYBASE SQL ANYWHERE via the ODBC driver in S-PLUS
4.5 on a PC. The same technique should work with Oracle. You can submit
a SQL statement through S-PLUS's ODBC import dialog.

The best way to get Oracle data into S-Plus is to use the ODBC interface.
In S-Plus under the file menu, select Import Data> From ODBC Connection... In the dialog box you can use a SQL query to pull only a portion of the
database into S-Plus. In order to do this, you need to have the Oracle
ODBC driver installed. The drivers can be found on your Oracle CD.

The only way I've done this is to go from oracle to Sas, where I do some
preliminary work, and then from Sas to Splus. If you need further details,
let me know. Perhaps by now, someone has given you information about
a more direct route.

the S+for windows (from version 4.0) allows ODBC-Access, which in turn
would allow accessing Oracle.

From: Mette Langaas <Mette.Langaas@nr.no>

I have checked this out for Splus=SPlus 5.1 for UNIX. It seems that data
can be imported into S-Plus from oracle (I managed to do that) but
S-Plus kan not export data to oracle. Therefore I ended up by using
ascii files for import and export Splus-oracle.

If you are interested in details on how to import data from oracle into
S-Plus 5.1 UNIX I can send you an example -- but let me know if you are
interested as soon as possible (I'm starting on my maternal leave Oct
7).

already on leave and all the best to her.... ).
