Again I seek to draw upon the collective wisdom and learning of the
subscribers to this list for the answer to a non-S question.

What/who is the source of the phrase

	``the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics''?

I always thought the phrase was due to Sir Arthur Eddington, but a
colleague insists that this is not so. I could not find this phrase
in any of the books-of-quotations in our library.

If anyone knows/thinks they know, please email me directly ---

--- so as to avoid wasting bandwidth on non-S matters. If I
also receive indications of interest, I'll post a brief summary
to the list. I'd appreciate precise references to the source
if possible.

				cheers,
