I have come across other problems with importing Excel 97 files in S-Plus
2000.
1) ensuring the work sheet which I wish to import is the first in line, as
there is no option to select which worksheet to read from and
2) S-Plus seems to ignore a columns which reference other worksheets via a
function such a VLOOKUP.
I have imported my Excel file into another stats package which allow
selection of both worksheet and columns to read and then exported to
another Excel file with one worksheet before importing into S-Plus.
