Having worked with S+2000 since its beta days, I've found the best way to
manage projects is using the new Workspace feature, and have migrated from
the old set-S_PROJ-in-a-shortcut way.
Although it's possible to modify the search path using the Object Explorer,
changes to the search path aren't saved in the Object Explorer *unless* you
filter on the database added *and* the "Archive Database Position Only"
option is unchecked. (Both options from the Advanced context menu on a
folder in the left pane.) For this reason I generally don't use the OE to
manage projects.
Instead, I create a new workspace from "File | Workspace | New" (letting it
create the _Data for me if it's a new project), and then immediately save
the workspace (in case I forget later; I'm a forgetful guy). If I need a
specialised Object Explorer, or want some script files opened, I'll create
those too and save the workspace again. Then when starting S-PLUS, the
workspace file is usually at the bottom of the File | Workspace | Open menu,
and I'll switch to it that way. Otherwise, I'll just browse to the project
folder and open the workspace in the usual way. This puts the workspace
_Data directory in position 1 (and unfortunately leaves the default _Data in
position 2, but I've become accustomed to that now).
If you still want to create shortcut icons, you can put the workspace file
directly on the command line, for example:
"D:\Program Files\sp2000\cmd\SPLUS.exe" "D:\temp\beta carotene.sws"
on the Target line. This works because the .sws files are just S scripts to
close all documents and then open the relevant files. You can also
double-click on a .sws file in Windows Explorer and choose S-PLUS in the
"open with" dialog, and even associate S-PLUS with .sws files (which isn't
done by default). This isn't (yet) officially recommended MathSoft
procedure, but it works for me. You can still use the S_PROJ technique,
which sets the search path correctly, but then you'll have to open any saved
object browsers, scripts, etc. by hand.
In summary, the Workspace feature isn't perfect by far, but I've found it to
be useful in practice. If anyone on the list has any comments or
suggestions about how the Workspace facility should work, please email me.
I'll summarise to the list, and make sure the recommendations are passed on
to the development team in Seattle.
