To all:
I found, to my chagrin, that after referencing Brian Ripley's info, in-text
codes to enhance graphics labels didn't work. Shortly thereafter, Rich
Calaway of Mathsoft emailed me the following, confirming that it was an
S-Plus deficiency, not mine:

They **do** work in 4.x, however. Alas, the Splus 2000 documentation says
they work in 2000, too. Ergo my confusion. Sorry for any confusing of others
I may have caused.
