I believe that the following position is attractive, both scientifically
and from the general environment. The advantages outweigh the disadvantage
of having to learn German within approximately 1 year after starting the
position.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ)
invites applications for an
** Assistant or Associate Professorship in Computational Statistics **
We expect the appointee to strengthen connections between mathematics and
statistics on the one hand and applications and computer science on the
other. In addition to research, duties of this position include teaching in
statistics and mathematics for students of mathematics, engineering and
natural sciences.
Candidates should have the doctorate or equivalent and have demonstrated to
the ability to carry out independent research. Willingness to teach
at all university levels and to collaborate with colleagues is expected.
For an appointment as associate professor, a strong research record in
computational statistics and proven ability to direct reseach of high
quality are required.
Applications with curriculum vitae and a list of publications should be
submitted to the *President of ETH Zurich, ETH Zentrum, CH-8092 Z|rich, no
later than November 15, 1999*. The ETHZ specifically encourages female
candidates to apply with a view towards increasing the proportion of female
professors.

Some additional information:
Associate professors are permanent, and promotion to full professor is
possible after a minimum of 3 years. Assistant professorships are limited
to 6 years. There is no tenure track system at ETHZ, but in a longer
perspective we definitely want to have computational statistics represented
at the senior level. Thus if someone is hired as assistant professor, there
will be a possibility of promotion, although the details of this procedure
are not settled at the moment.
