I have 3 Win 9x machines (2 Win 95, 1 Win 98).  Two have 300 MHz PII 
processors, 1 has a 266 MHz PII processor.  The slower processor has 192 MB 
RAM, while the faster processors have 128 MB RAM.  (Don't ask why; it is an 
accident of history).

Anyway, I don't see a measureable difference in processing speed (same 
data, same wide range of functions) between the slower processor, higher 
memory machine, and the higher speed, less memory machines.  Since the 266 
MHz machine is only nominally slower than the 300 MHz machines, but has 50% 
more memory, I would have expected to see some speedup in memory intensive 
processes (e.g. bootstrap, monte carlo simulations).

There is clearly a difference between 64MB and 128/192MB, but is there a 
next order of magnitude where I might see some significant performance 
improvements?  256MB, 384MB, 512MB.  Memory is cheap now, but I don't want 
to waste money to gain nominal or no improvement.

What performance gains, if any, might I expect if I double the 
memory?  Triple the memory?  Quadruple it?
