Dear S-Plus users,
I have three related questions.
(1) I use S-Plus 4.5 for Windows. I want to use the map() function to
represent some U.S. county-level data that I have. (This function is
described in R. Becker and A. Wilks, "Maps in S," available at
http://www.research.att.com/areas/stat/doc/index.html). But although
documentation on the function is available in my online help, the
function itself does not seem to exist. Is it not included in my version
of S-Plus for some reason? (Is it somehow outmoded? Maybe it stepped on
the toes of the SpatialStats package?) If it's not included, can I
nevertheless get it from somewhere else?
(2) I talked to someone who has used the map() function on a unix
machine, and they mentioned having had a lot of trouble getting it to
shade polygons properly --- something to do with the method for
translating data values into color values. Assuming there is a solution
to Q(1) is this a problem I should anticipate having with the map()
function?
(3) If the answers to either of the above questions mean I can't use the
map() function, does anyone have a recommendation for a (friendly,
affordable) package I could use instead?
I'll post a summary of any responses I receive.
Thanks,
Kieran Healy
