Of course the aspect ratio is far from 1. That is exactly the intent. What I
was trying to do was control the physical dimension on the plot according to
the value of the variables; that is, so that moving one centimeter to the
right means a change of 1 in the variable on the x-axis and moving one
centimeter up means a change of 1 in the variable on the y-axis. The data
in question range from 0 to 10 on the x-axis and 0 to 5 on the y-axis. The
default S-PLUS plotting routines create a plot with the aspect ratio fairly
close to 1, but that is not what was asked for. What is desired I believe is
an aspect ratio of 1/2 (or 2, depending on how you define it).

I am sorry, but the solution below is NOT close. If x and y have much
different ranges, the code below will make the ranges on each axis the same,
and therefore leave the aspect ratio of the data as it is conventionally
defined far from 1.
