Responses:
Marcelo A. Ferreira Gomes reported that a colleague has had similar
problems with several versions of S-Plus under Windows 95.
Stephen J. Smith reported that he is using S-Plus 2000 without problems.
Two replies from MathSoft stated that the problem was "that one of the
files in your _Prefs directory is corrupt" and that I should either delete
that directory or backup and delete the files there, one by one, to locate
the faulty file.
In summary, the problem hasn't been resolved yet. I trust that MathSoft
can locate the cause of the corruption and if it's in S-Plus (the only
program that accesses the _Prefs directory), fix it.
If anyone else experiences such crashes, please contact MathSoft to alert
them to it. With any luck, that will speed a cure.
My thanks to all who responded.
