[S] Sorting matrix elements, keeping track of original positions

I have a matrix of numbers and I wish to sort them in ascending
order (either way is fine) *and*, while doing this, keep track of the
indices describing their original position in the matrix. rank() does
this for vectors, but I can't see how to do this for matrices. Hints
appreciated!
