[S] nlme3 in Splus 2000

Until recently I was contentedly using nlme2 in Splus 3.3. Now that I've upgraded to Splus 2000, I'd like to start using nlme3 but haven't succeeded. For example, this command (from the Weights.q script file supplied with the nlme3 library):
fm1Weight <- lme(strength ~ Program * Time, data = Weights, random = ~ 1 | Subj)
gives this error message:
Error in .C("natural_pd",: subroutine natural_pd: 1 missing value(s) in argument 3
Nlme2 still seems to work just fine. Thanks for any suggestions.
