arachne is wedged...

Earlier today, we noticed that ARACHNE was wedged. The syslog messages were
'/ filesystem full' and 'no swap space'. We were unable to see anything as
root - no space left to generate any new process, so even 'ls' and 'ps' failed.

When the system was rebooted, we noticed a large [say 30] number of scheme
processes running. I don't know if this is ordinary or not. The root file
system is still 100% full, there doesn't appear to be any good condidates
for deletion/purging. ARACHNE has been rebooted again, this time the
webserver and oracle startup were disabled to give someone some time to take
a look.

On our production systems, there's usually a 'smoking gun' file around that
has caused this obnoxious behavior, but we haven't yet found it. When all
else fails, rebuilding the filesystem is the next step.

Let us know if we can help.

thanks, Pete
