Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF announces the availability of the DCE 1.0.3 update
DCE 1.0.3 includes several enhancements such as a new
IDL compiler that reduces overall size of generated
stubs by as much as 50 to 70 percent, threadsafe XDS
library support, and a new dce_config.
The core components of this release have undergone a
full QA cycle, and have exceeded quality targets on defect density .
This offering extends reference platform support to HP-
UX v9.0 running on HP700 series and OSF/1 1.2 running on
PC486. We continue to support AIX 3.2 on RS6000 and
SINIX SVr4 on MX300. All reference platforms have been
included in the system test cycle at OSF. Note that the
DECstation 3100 is no longer supported.
As in DCE 1.0.2, we will follow this release tape with
an update tape called DCE 1.0.3a, which will be a full
release of the DFS component. The DFS component on the
1.0.3a tape will include defect fixes, additional
changes for platform support, and will have undergone a
full QA cycle. This tape is expected in late February.
Note that the 1.0.3 tape contains all the files for the
DFS component, but that these have not been fully
tested.
This update is available to all licensees who currently
have either a Full Support or Technology Update contract
with OSF. Licensees who use the electronic update
service may access the release immediately. Those
requiring a tape distribution should expect to receive
tapes in the next week to 10 days. For licensing or
support contract information, contact direct@osf.org.
OSF DCE wins industry award for innovation
The momentum behind DCE was recognized in the Digital
News and Review's 9th annual Target Awards Presentation
held last week in San Francisco.
OSF DCE was presented the 1993 "Editor's Select Award"
for innovation that makes us re-think the strategic role
computer systems can play in our operations. In the
process, which involved DN&R editors voting on
technologies suitable for the award, DCE received
overwhelming response.
OSF would like to extend its thanks to all of you as
members and supporters for making this happen.

Distributed Management Environment (DME) Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
DME 1.0 Availability
Following the announcement of DME 1.0 General
Availability at the Management SIG in November, OSF is
processing orders for the DME 1.0 release. The release
meets the goals for quality that were set with input
from members earlier this year. It consists of source
code and accompanying user documentation for five
services designed to address specific management
problems:
- License Management Service(LMS)
- Software Distribution Service (SDS)
- Event Management Service (EVS)
- Subsystem Management Service (SMS)
- PC Services (PCS)
Using DCE to achieve interoperability between disparate
systems, DME 1.0 is tightly integrated with a number of
the DCE services. The DME technology relies on DCE's
Security Service, Directory Service, RPC, Thread Service
and Time Service.

OSF/Motif Highlights - User Environment Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Second Motif Release 2.0 Snapshot shipping in December
OSF is shipping its second release of the OSF/Motif
R2.0 snapshot in December. If you have not already
submitted your snapshot license, now would be an
appropriate time. This snapshot includes new features
and documentation as well as code corrections and
bug fixes made since the OSF/Motif 1.2 release.
Enhancements include extensibility that also allows one
to write new widgets without access to source code, new
widgets, workspace management, virtual screen support in
mwm, single API for Cut&Paste, Drag&Drop and primary
transfer. This snapshot builds and runs on three
OSF/Motif reference machines: HP 9000/700 running HP UX
9.01, using shared libraries; Sun Sparcstation 2 running
Sun OS 4.1.2, and an Intel 486 architecture system
running OSF/1 1.2.
Motif 93 User Conference Roundup
The Washington DC Hilton Towers hotel was the site of
the Motif 93 User Conference as over 125 users gathered
to present papers, studies and participate in panel
discussions. Keynote speaker for the conference was
Ellis Cohen, Principal OSF/Motif Architect, who outlined
the vision of next generation user technologies. For
those of you who missed Ellis, he will be the keynote
speaker for XWorld this spring. Key points discussed
throughout the two day event centered on Motif Rel. 2.0,
next generation UEC technologies or UEC-II, relationship
between OSF, X/Open and CDE, Drag/drop, virtual mwm and
workspace management, C++, and, as always, discussions
on potential new widgets. Attendees from end user
companies encouraged OSF to beef up education of the end
user community about style guide compliance. Many
excellent papers received good reviews and three
favorite panels captured the attention of most
attendees. They included: Future of UEC, Cross
Platform Development, and Ask OSF. Birds of a Feather
Sessions were conducted for Drag&Drop, Ask OSF, and C++.
Show organizers announced that a Motif '93 Conference
CD-ROM should be on its way to attendees shortly. Motif
94 User Conference details will be announced as soon as
they become available.
Motif R2.0 Licensing Terms and Conditions
During the November OSF Super Sig Week, the OSF/Motif
Business Area Group reviewed the licensing terms and
conditions for Release 2.0. Essentially, they are
consistent with Release 1.2 terms and conditions.
Recently, OSF/Motif Business area posted to various news
groups and distributed on Motif-talk and sig-uec an
explanation of the software developer options and
responsibilities for developing applications with Motif.
For a copy of this explanation, please send me email to
crow@osf.org. This document will be updated once or
twice a year.
End users want Motif compliant applications
At the Motif 93 User Conference earlier this month, one
message came across loud and clear. End users want to
know what applications are Motif compliant! You can do
three things to help end users become aware of your
applications and implementations.
1. Let us know. OSF keeps a database of applications
and implementations that use the Motif GUI. Every time
we see an application advertised or mentioned in a
periodical, we send that company a questionnaire and
enter the information we receive into the DBMS. From
this information, OSF publish a third party catalog of
Motif applications (obtainable from direct@osf.org). To
include your Motif application or implementation
developed in the past 20 months, please send email to
crow@osf.org or tarbet@osf.org.
2. Tell us about your most unusual Motif application.
To help end users become aware of available Motif
applications and implementations we are looking for the
most "unusual" application of 1993. We're considering
several "fun" activities for 1994 that will meet their
objectives, so if you've an application you believe is
quite different, send a description to Darrell Crow at
crow@osf.org or fax: 617-621-0584. It could well be the
one we're looking for.
3. OSF/Motif Style Certification program. End users
also want a published list of all applications that have
achieved "Motif Style" certification. The next edition
of the OSF/Motif Third Party Catalog will include a copy
of the OSF Certification Seal next to each certified
application listing. If you would like to have your
listing include the seal, send for a request for
certification kit to: crow@osf.org.
UEC Software Developers Survey
The OSF/Motif group is seeking software developers for
discussions about requirements for UEC II. Included
below is a questionnaire for interested developers.
Please return completed surveys by December 31 to:
Shirley Schneider at email: shirley@osf.org or fax:
617-621-0584.
UEC II is the unofficial name for a next-generation
offering in the User Environment from OSF. This
technology is currently in the planning and
investigation stage. It is envisioned as an enabling
technology to facilitate software development and
maintenance of new, object-oriented, multimedia, and
highly distributed applications for users of networked
systems and portable computing devices.
In contrast to the desktop-centric user interface
conventions of today, UEC II supports a user-centric
model of computing involving a high degree of user
mobility, and customization or tailorability of
application software to individual devices, user
preferences, and work models.

Standards Coordinating Committee in Brussels
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
We are exploring the option of holding the next OSF
Standards Coordinating Committee (SCC) meeting in
Brussels in conjunction with the May '94 OSF Member
Meeting. The main topic will probably be convergence
between the Internet Protocol Suite and OSI.
We need your feedback on alternate meeting dates and
times. Which would you more likely attend?
a) Monday, 23 May, the day before the OSF Member
Meeting (starting about 10:30 Monday morning),
b) During the Member Meeting as a track (probably on
Thursday, May 26 ), or
c) Friday, 27 May, following the Member Meeting
(probably finishing about 13:00).
Please reply to Henry Lowe by e-mail: lowe@osf.org, FAX:
+1-617-621-0631, or telephone: +1-617-621-8783.
Background
Standards are a big part of OSF's offerings. OSF's
Standard Coordinating Committee (SCC) meets twice a
year. Each meeting focuses on one main standards
related topic and what it means to OSF and its members.
In addition, there are usually a number of reports on
other standards related activities and what OSF is
doing.
Traditionally, the SCC has held one day meetings in the
U.S. This has made it difficult for international
members to participate. We'd like to change that. With
increasing cost consciousness within the industry, we
are exploring ways for SCC members to participate in SCC
meetings without the necessity of making a special one
day trip to attend the SCC. Holding SCC meetings in
conjunction with a Member Meeting or a SIG meeting is
one possibility. Another possibility is the use of
videoconferencing.
Hence this notice. For the Spring 1994 meeting of the
SCC, will you attend if it is held in conjunction with
the Members Meeting in Brussels? Which of the three
options above would you prefer for this SCC meeting?
For future SCC meetings, would you like to see the SCC
meet in conjunction with either SIG or Member Meetings?
If you cannot travel to attend the SCC meeting, could
you participate (i.e., have access) via videoconference?
Your feedback is important. The SCC is your committee
and we want to make it as valuable to members as
possible.
