DCE Interoperability Events
Uniforum 1994 in San Francisco will kick-off a series of
DCE promotional events where OSF members and licensees
can showcase their products that support DCE. The key
message from these events is that DCE systems, tools, and
applications have proliferated during the past year and
are available from numerous vendors. The cornerstones of
the promotional schedule are four well-promoted
Networld+Interop events, where OSF will showcase members'
and licensees' OSF certified DCE-compliant products:

Distributed Management Environment (DME) Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF Selects Bull As Primary Integrator for the DME
Network Management Option (NMO)
OSF has selected Bull S.A. to be the primary integrator
for the completion of the Network Management Option (NMO)
component of OSF's Distributed Management Environment
(DME). Bull is already a significant contributor to the
OSF DME, notably as the provider of the implementation of
X/Open's management protocol (XMP) application
programming interface (API).
The NMO release is planned for mid year 1994, allowing
users to benefit very quickly from a standard base
platform. As primary integrator, Bull will complete the
integration of the various subcomponents of the NMO
technology, develop the event system, and conduct system
test work.
The NMO, which is targeted to the management of
heterogeneous networks, handles the support of the simple
network management protocol (SNMP) and the common
management interface protocol (CMIP) management protocols
in distributed environments. The NMO is designed to
support legacy systems as well as work with emerging
standards. The underlying technologies that were
selected by OSF come from Bull, Hewlett Packard, and
Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme. OSF has for the
past year led a combined team of the above companies
which has prepared for this final integration process.

OSF/Motif Highlights - User Environment Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
It's OFFICIAL -- Motif IS NOW AN IEEE STANDARD!
Motif is now a formal industry standard, after passing
its last administrative hurdle the first of December --
the IEEE Standards Board. The IEEE GUI interface
standard is P1295. This standard,a subset of Motif 1.2,
includes specifications for both the API and the look and
feel for all the Motif widgets. OSF thanks all OSF
members who have contributed to this IEEE standard. OSF
prime contributors include Paul Rabin, Kamesh Ramakrishna
and Vania Joloboff. The project number was changed from
P1295.1 to P1295 since the OPEN LOOK project, P1295.2 was
withdrawn.
Motif API spec submitted to X/Open Fast Track
On December 1 X/Open started the formal Fast-Track
Company Review of the Motif API specification. This
review will end in January 1994. This Motif API
specification includes the support for gadgets, drag and
drop, and UIL as a superset of the IEEE standard.
All X/Open shareholders, technical buy-out members,
nominated representatives of Associate Membership Groups
and members of the Common Desktop Environment working
group may submit comments.
Copies of the specifications may be obtained directly
from X/Open at X/Open Company Limited, Apex Plaza,
Forbury Road, Reading, UK, RG1 1AX
Second Motif R2.0 Snapshot Shipped
This past December OSF shipped its second snapshot of
OSF/Motif R 2.0. If you have not already submitted your
snapshot license, you can still sign up for the snapshot
program. The current snapshot includes new features and
documentation as well as code corrections and bug fixes
made since the OSF/Motif 1.2 release. Enhancements
include extensibility that allows developers to write new
widgets without access to source code, new widgets,
workspace management, virtual screen support in
mwm, single API for Cut*Paste, Drag&Drop and primary
transfer. This snapshot builds and runs on three
OSF/Motif reference machines: HP 9000/700 running HP UX
9.01, using shared libraries; Sun Sparcstation 2 running
Sun OS 4.1.2, and an Intel 486 architecture system
running OSF/1 1.2. Contact OSF Direct Channels at 617-
621-7300 or 617-621-8835 for snapshot information.
Call for submissions for Motif Products Listing
In anticipation of the Spring '94 edition of the
OSF/Motif User Environment Products Listing, we invite
you to update and/or amend any copy you may have
submitted in the past. We also strongly encourage any
newcomers to the ranks of Motif ISVs and end-users to
submit product descriptions for inclusion. Shipments of
the list is brisk: more than 100 copies a month are
requested. To review your current listing, or to acquire

OSF/1 Highlights
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF/1 use continues to grow
Adoption of the OSF/1 technology continues to grow. To
date, OSF/1 has well over 100 source licensees. Many
vendors offer products based on the OSF/1 technology.
The current release of the technology has been shipping
for a year and includes internationalization based on
XPG4. In addition, OSF/1 V1.3, the microkernel release,
is available for OSF licensees. To learn more about
suppliers of OSF/1 technology and available OSF/1
releases, please contact OSF Direct Channels at email:
direct@osf.org or call 617-621-7300.
OSF Plans OSF/1 demonstration at Uniforum
OSF is planning the OSF/1 demonstration in its booth at
Uniforum, March 23-25, and invites members to
participate with equipment and demonstrations
highlighting their implementation of the OSF/1 operating
system. Members interested in exhibiting in the OSF
booth at Uniforum may contact Marcia Roland, OSF/1
Technology Manager, at 617-621-8720 or email:
roland@osf.org.
OSF/1 Rated Most Open by IS Managers
Computerworld surveyed 164 IS Managers, and published
their results in the December 6 1993 issue. OSF/1 was
rate the most open on the basis of:
* compatibility with interface standards
* application portability across different hardware
platforms
* support for open communications standards
* interoperable support for heterogeneous standards
* more than one supplier of the primary technology
* third party support and applications availability
* Published set of public and de facto standards
scalable across different sized hardware platforms
It is nice to see that the goal of offering technology
based on relevant industry standards is being recognized
by IS Managers.

ANDF Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
ANDF Technology Papers available
Volume 4 of the ANDF Technology Collected Papers is now
available. The collection covers topics such as:
- ANDF's benefits to the industry in general
- ANDF's benefits to one particular vendor
- A description of the new ANDF Research Kit
- Utilization of the ANDF technology within the OSF RI
- Issues on building an ANDF producer from an existing
language front end.
ANDF Research Kit
The new ANDF Research Kit will be available in March. It
contains all the software necessary to work with the
ANDF technology, both for compiler experimentation and
application porting. It also contains technology
developed by DRA, OSF, and the FSF. Because it contains
proprietary code from DRA, a signed ANDF Cooperative
Research Agreement is prerequisite to receiving the kit.
This kit and the corresponding agreement replace the
ANDF Snapshot program. All ANDF Snapshot licensees are
encouraged to continue the active involvement that has
supported ANDF efforts..
A subset of the ANDF Research Kit, the GANDF installer
technology, consists freely distributable code. This
code will be available via unrestricted FTP access in
the near future.
DEPLOY Program
The OSF Research Institute (RI) will participate in the
Esprit DEPLOY project. This three year program is aimed
at the promotion of the ANDF technology, including
standardization, educational activities, and conformance
testing. The RI's main contribution will be conformance
testing. In addition the RI currently participates in
the OMI/GLUE project, whose aim is to make ANDF available
for more languages and target architectures.
Mosaic and ANDF
The NCSA Mosaic browser and server have been built and
installed using ANDF on a variety of platforms at the
OSF RI, including Intel 486 running OSF/1, HP-PA RISC
715 running HP-UX 9.0, and IBM RS-6000 running AIX 3.2.
This is an important step in assuring that distributed
applications can be installed on any platform that has
an ANDF installer.
The OSF RI is also maintaining a Mosaic server which
provides information about many OSF RI programs and
technologies, including ANDF. A subset of the papers
from the "ANDF Technology Collected Papers" are
available for viewing. These papers are also available
on-line via the OSF FTP server "grabbag.osf.org". There
will also be an anonymous FTP server in the near future.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Correction
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The January 14 OSF Electronic Flash erroneously cited the
source of a Computerworld opinion survey on open systems.
According to the referenced article (Computerworld 6-Dec-
93, pp. 119-122), the rankings were the result of a
Computerworld survey, and not the X/Open global survey as
originally stated in the OSF Electronic Flash.

New Case History from OSF
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
A new OSF case history, "Open Systems Technology Helps
Shine a New Light on the Sciences," describes the work
underway at Argonne National Laboratory harnessing open
systems technology to help meet the goals for its new
Advanced Photon Source (APS). This facility will
accommodate 300 scientists at a time who will be able to
perform 1,000 experiments annually.
"The APS facility will have a lifetime spanning decades,
and will be used by researchers from industry,
universities, and other national labs," says Mark
Anderson, computer scientist in the Controls Group at
APS. "An open systems-based computing and services core
and interface to internal and external researchers is
absolutely necessary for the success of APS."
The case study outlines the APS computing environment and
the significant role OSF technology will play in the
facility's operation, scientist's investigations, and in
access to experiment data within the APS and by
researchers nationwide.
For a copy of the case study send your name and address
(surface mail) via email to literature-request@osf.org,
or call 617-621-8895. For both email and voice mail,
please include the document title and number - Open
Systems Technology Helps Shine a New Light on the
Sciences; O-OSF-CS2-1193-1.

business investment decisions that all companies face.
Driven by initiatives underway at many companies, the
symposium will focus on the Distributed Computing
Environment (DCE) as one of the primary attempts to
deliver a comprehensive solution to client/server
computing in a multivendor environment. Since many
companies have a significant investment in large
systems, a major focus will be placed on the
implementation of DCE on MVS.
