From a NORML press release sent to libernet:
- PRESIDENT-ELECT OF AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION ADVOCATES "LEGALIZING DRUGS"
On June 28, the president-elect of the American Bar Association told the USA
Today he favors "legalizing drugs" as a way to reduce crime. George
Bushnell, who takes over the 375,000-member organization in August, says that
this view does not necessarily represent that of the ABA.
"Many thoughtful people are looking at decriminalization as a way of dealing
with the violence that's associated with the prohibition against certain
drugs," said Bushnell, 70.
Bushnell also criticized a number of provisions in the federal crime bill:
- The so-called "three strikes and you're out" proposal is a "glitzy
political response to the fear that grips our country."
- Building more prisons is "a rathole for money."
- The bill "has become a political engine for both federal and state
legislative candidates and in every state with a gubernatorial election."
