If you're looking for a free-market ACLU, check out the Institute for
Justice. They have fought fought against restrictive licensing in the
areas of cosmetology and taxi service; they have fought for the rights
of high-school students to opt-out of mandatory public-service
programs; they have fought for the rights of city and state
_governments_ to limit welfare-benefits-increases to mothers who have
more children. Their most successful case to date (IMO) was the Dolan
case involving the right of a family to expand their plumbing store;
the Supreme Court ruled that the city's requirement that the family
build a "greenway" on their property and "donate" it to the city to
get permission to expand was a "taking."
The Institute has a training program for lawyers who want to pursue
constitutional cases against the gov't. They've been active in
publishing op-ed pieces and books.
