One of the goals of libertarians is privatizing
roads. However, it is usually viewed as a long way off since there are
so many other libertarian goals which are more acceptable to the
mainstream. Many people seem to think that private companies just
can't run roads properly. In this weekend's NYT, there was an article
which said that governments in Latin America have been selling many of
their big roads to private companies to maintain. The companies get
their income from tolls. Apparently, the governments there don't
maintain roads very well due to corruption, excessive bureaucracy,
etc. (sounds like Cambridge), so this is the only way to maintain the
roads. So, it really can work.
