Subject: FREEH: *BAN* private crypto

Washington, DC -- If private encryption schemes interfere with the FBI's abilit
y to wiretap, they could be outlawed, according to recent comments made by the
agency's Director Louis Freeh.

[Read the rest of the article by Brock Meeks at
http://cyberwerks.com:70/1s/cyberwire/cwd in the 20 October 94 article]

Flush with his success with the Digital Telephony (Wiretap Bill), Director
Freeh sets his new sites on those who attempt to evade "legitimate law and
order objectives" with non-escrowed encryption techniques such as PGP
or MailSafe.

Apparently this is the first time he has explicitly mentioned banning non
approved crypto, if necessary.

I'm sure it will be a "necessary" as the Wiretap Bill...

Anybody want to start a pool on the last version number for PGP before
it is classed as a criminal tool and outlawed? 3.1?
