A relevant point is that the school prayer, flagburning, etc group is not really mainstream even amoung conservatives -- most don't particularly care about these sorts of issues. Although the religious right gets a dispproportionate amount of attention for their numbers, none of their candidates (Robertson, Buchanan...) stands a chance of ever winning a major nomination. On the other hand, "fairness", redistribition of wealth, affirmative action and so on seem to be quite mainstream, if not central, ideas on the liberal side. Of course, this may be partly because anyone who does question, say, the need for affirmative action is immediately denounced as a conservative regardless of his opinions on other issues...
