There is an article in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine
about a group of Cuban young people called rockers. Apparently, they
purposely inject themselves with HIV infected blood to get AIDS.
Living conditions in Cuba's AIDS clinics are better than those of
healthy citizens and other clinics. They get food, A/C, and clean
sheets. (Patients at other hospitals have to bring their own sheets
and drugs.) The rockers also get AIDS as a way to escape and protest
Cuban society which doesn't allow them to listen to listen to
heavy-metal music and dress like American heavy-metal rock musicians.
Often, their boyfriends/girlfriends also get AIDS so that they can
live (and die) with them. I guess they took the slogan "Socialism or
Death!" literally.
