The LPHQ has done much to try to set up systems for dissemination of
information, with more and more emphasis on bite-size approaches. (There
is actually a lecture tape called "operation bite size" or something
to that effect.) Also, the party does have a national 800 number which
is a general information line.
The problem with such methods is that, with the possible exception of the
press, no one searches for answers. Instead, they wait for the prospective
sides of a given issue to advertise their positions. The onus is on the
activists to put out the message, not wait for questions.
My suggestion is first to join whatever level of national organization
suits you. For some that's the national LP, a state LP, the CATO
insitute, or single issue groups like GOA, CLT, Term Limits, etc. Just
getting the LP News each month (or a local newsletter) is well worth the
$12 - $25 a year fee. I think there is a lot of rumor, misinformation,
and lack of touch with regard to the libertarians and their organizations.
I've seen a lot of suggestions for ideas that basically are already in
existence. If you look at the LP's Project Healthy Choice, Operation
Safe Streets, Operation Everywhere, and so on, you'll see a much more
moderate, realistic and mature tactical approach to politics. The thing
is, you have to see them.
Is it time to send out addresses to the LPHQ? They'll send you update
letters (asking for donations) about once a month. I rarely give anything
other than the yearly dues, but the updates really give one a sense of
where the movement is headed. Everyone should be on the LP mailing list.
