In a part of the AP story:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Interest groups rushed to claim credit for the
defeat of eight-term Democratic Rep. Mike Synar in an Oklahoma
runoff, and his House colleagues fretted that the loss is a warning
of voter anger.
Contributing to his loss to a 71-year-old retired school
principal, a political unknown, were campaigns by several interest
groups Synar has fought over the years: the National Rifle
Association, the Gun Owners of America, the Christian Coalition and
U.S. Term Limits.
Both Gun Owners of America, and U.S. Term Limits are strongly
supported by Libertarians, for that matter, so is the NRA. However,
GOA and Limits are both groups that have less than warm welcome
with many Republicans. We should all be happy that our influence
can be felt, even if it must be combined with others in single
issue groups. Indeed, the fact that we can work successfully
with others on such issues is a great thing to build upon. It tosses
out convincingly the charge that we are "unknowns" or "kooks."
