At the organizational meeting on Thursday, there were some questions
raised about the existence of a Pro-Choice group on campus. Here is a
letter from the pro-choice group. It should prove helpful to those of
you on the Gender Issues Committee when you deal with Pro-Choice
Issues.

(it is also a disturbing statement about health care in general...)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- A 19-year-old pregnant woman too
poor to afford an abortion shot herself in the abdomen, police
said. She was jailed on murder charges after her baby was born
three months premature and died.
Kawana Michele Ashley was turned away from an abortion clinic
because she didn't have enough money, the St. Petersburg Times
reported Friday.
Unemployed, she already had a 3-year-old child and lived with
her grandmother.
Ashley's boyfriend, the father, initially said he would help
her, but ``nothing ever happened,'' her friend, Sharrona Faye
Wright told the Times.
A month later, desperate and feeling helpless, Ashley put a
.22-caliber pistol to the right side of her abdomen and pulled the
trigger, according to friends and court records.
Her baby, Brittany Ashley, was delivered by emergency Caesarean
section in March, a bullet through her wrist. The baby's
underdeveloped kidneys began to fail and she died 15 days later, on
April 11.
Ashley first told police she had been wounded in a drive-by
shooting near her home.
She was charged Wednesday with manslaughter and third-degree
murder. She was being held on $50,000 bail.
Area clinics told the Times that an abortion performed 20 weeks
into the pregnancy can cost from $1,300 to $1,800.
A few states, such as California and New York, pay for abortions
through Medicaid, the government health care program for the poor.
Florida is among the majority of states that do not.
Wright recalled a conversation she had with Ashley after the
visit to the clinic, the name of which she didn't know.
``We were talking about something else and all of a sudden, she
just said she would just shoot herself in the stomach,'' Wright
recalled. ``I just brushed it off. I told her, `Oh, you're not
going to do anything like that.'''
