you might want to have the routine optionally canonicalize the hostname as a convenience, so I can pass gethostname() directly into the function, and not lose. I say optionally, because multi-homed and/or hosts with more than one name are probably better dealt with outside the library. (Or are they?) Something to consider, anyway.
