Those numbers are for streams of characters.  I find that when I use
an encrypted connection, simple typing seems more sluggish, although
lots of characters is not as slow.  Also, how much of that time was
waiting for X?

Although I've never looked at the code, this may be because a single
character needs to be transmitted as eight, so an entire DES block can
be decrypted at the other end.

Of course, if you don't mind using encrypted connections all the time,
there's little reason not to.
