Some more info on this alternate ASN.1 compiler/run-time library:

Subject: Yet another ASN.1 compiler.
The OSF DCE project has an X.500 component, provided by Siemens, which
uses ASN.1...
I just got a copy of an older version of their ASN.1 compiler (known
as MAVROS); it was a joint product of INRIA and Siemens; the copy I
have is a little buggy, but it actually has people supporting it and
using it for products, and the run-time library and compiler seem to
be significantly smaller than the ISODE stuff. This seems to be worth
pursuing.
They're willing to give it away (for non-commercial use), and seemed
to be willing to put the run-time library in the public domain.

Hi Bill,
this is Dietmar Fauth from SNI, formerly Siemens. I think we once met while
I was working
for OSF. I'm in charge of the Mavros ASN.1 compiler within SNI; Teo
passed me your messages where you expressed interest in using Mavros.
I am pleased to inform you that we could leave Mavros to MIT free of charge;
we would only ask you to sign an agreement to not use it commercially. We
are about to draft such a contract.
I understand you have available an older version of Mavros. There do
exist newer ones where bugs are fixed. We are also working on an
extended version that incorporates the handling of ASN.1 macros and
value notation. We can send you some more information on these extensions
as soon as you acknowledge the receipt of this message.

Bill,
As you may know, the original version of MAVROS was developped by
INRIA within the ESPRIT project "THORN", of which SIEMENS was also a
partner (thus co-owner of results). Further developments, after the
end of the project, are being funded jointly by INRIA and SIEMENS.
INRIA would probably be willing to put at least the support library
for the MAVROS compiler in the public domain -- provided we can indeed
use Kerberos (~).
You mention several bugs, which I think are corrected by now, plus one
in the handling of "SEQUENCE OF SEQUENCE {...}" which I dont recall
having corrected. Could you please document it?
Thanks
Christian Huitema

Hi Bill,
I talked to our contract person; he tried to call you but didn't get
through. This is what he wants me to mail you:
"Before we deliver the compiler, a non-disclosure and licence agreement
has to be signed. To obtain the compiler the following has to be done:
1. an MIT address and responsible person must be named
2. the scope of the delivery and the
3. time durance have to be clarified "
His name is Juergen Hermann, his phone number is 49 89 636 41334.
He assured me all can be done quickly.
You should also get some mail regarding the error reports; this will
be sent by Alex Festor who is in charge of doing the actual work.
Since he has no mail box of his own he'll use mine.
Dietmar
