Personally, I think having a common set of head files would be a win.
We just need to really be sure we don't make a mistake... I suspect 
a
that we will need to perform cross-architecture testing to really
be sure we get them all...

Also, while you are at it - check the gssapi library - it has sized types
in there as well...
