   This part about DES makes me somewhat confused.  Isn't MIT using
   libdes these days?  libdes works fine on crays.

We're using the Dennis Ferguson (from Canada) DES implementation.  

Given Canada's enlightened export policies, it is available outside the
U.S.  Is that the one you're using, Assar?
