the problem there is that we never find *out* that they aren't set.
(Too bad #warning isn't standard :-)
Perhaps if more of that were folded into configure (though it's not
all that practical.) And I'll admit that I added an #ifdef __unix__
case to the end, just to catch real svr4, with the same values, which
probably has the same effect...
