I think the clean and correct long-term solution is to move the autoconf
stuff up a level. That seems to be best practice (or at least one of
them). For packages as large as krb5, I think pulling everything up from
src doesn't make as clean of a tree.
Also, the history and patch issue is quite real.
So in preference order:
1) move autoconf stuff up a level
2) src/doc references ../../doc
3) status quo
4) doc moves to src/doc
5) src moves up a level.
