Sam,
Can you send me a copy of the /usr/dict/words you were using
that was causing a problem on your Linux system? It's possible that
it's related to /usr/dict/words, although at this point the likeliest
suspect is a compiler bug, since I think you mentioned you were using an
(old) Slackware release....
I'll try using your /usr/dict/words on my built binaries, and
see if I can reproduce the problem.
