Not that it makes much difference given the DES code, but this is a
bit of a surprise regarding SHA-1...
I suspect that the difference here is that "someone asked". I
wouldn't be surprised if you'd get the same answer if you asked about
the export control status of MD4 or MD5.
(BTW, a followup mail from the other co-chair said essentially that).
An attempt to search 15 CFR 768-799 found lots of text relating to
software used to control precision milling machines..
