My opinion is that we should try to simplify the autoconf tests to cover
the generic case, rather than going for every single OS flavor; usually,
the OS supports multiple mechanisms for accomplishing the same thing,
and it is only when the autoconf tests and code paths fail to work that
I believe we should revisit the code.

After having seen several pieces
of code that were specifically geared toward certain OS's, I can say
that the code is ugly, and the next new OS that comes along generally
breaks. When the code is structured for using generally available
mechanisms (eg. STREAMS, etc.), the code is much simpler and generally
supports a wider range of OS flavors.
