running configure from a symlink farm

I made a symlink farm to krb5 sources and ran configure.
I don't, when building, have write access to the sources. So when
configure tried to write the top level makefile, it tried to write to
my source tree and failed. I then wound up, after running configure,
with the initial toplevel makefile, which tells me to run configure.
