I've applied your autoconf and make-related patches from 921, 926,
928, 944, 952, 953, 954, 955, 956, 958, 959, 960, and 961. There were
minor changes in one or two places, but most of them were fine as-is.
(I still need to go back and change AC_TRY_LINK to AC_TRY_COMPILE in
some of them.) In particular, these include the improved caching
tests. (I haven't done a full build with them yet.)
