I've fixed this (somewhat). The Makefiles generated by the configure
scripts will print "making in dir1/dir2...", which is arguably more
correct.
I still haven't gotten the configure scripts to dtrt with printing a
complete relative path from the top when calling configure scripts in
subdirectories, though.
