What is incorrect or disfunctional about the previous
behavior? I.E. I'm not interested in applying OS-specific patches
just to match the behavior of the vendor telnetd unless there is a
clear reason that the current behavior doesn't work.

This would be useful if you have detailed change logs
explaining what the patches do.

Check AC_HOST and then define something based on that in
configure.in. Because Gcc doesn't really deal with AIX4 that well,
and because many people do not have IBM's new compiler, don't depend
on things from /etc/xlc.cfg.
