I suspect your problem is that you didn't add the correct lines to
/etc/service, and that the error message was really something like
"kerberos/udp service unknown". I suspect you didn't give us the exact
error message.
As far as kinit saying "principal unknown", did you create that
principal in your Kerberos V5 database using kdb5_edit?
