In this situation, I would argue that you should configure
--with-krb4=some_directory and install a real krb4 package in that
directory. The purpose of including krb4 libraries in the v5 source
tree is to ease upgrading from v4 to v5, and where possible (and I
realize it isn't possible for you), using a single configuration/key
file would be useful.
Unfortunately, maintaining the ability to compile against a
user-supplied libkrb.a does sort of defeat the idea of moving compat_*
int the v4 code.
