You seem to be doing it correctly.  The error message which telnetd is
returning (decode the hex characters into ASCII) is "Can't decode
authenticator", which is a pretty generic error message.

Keep in mind, what you're doing here is a V4 authentication; the fact
that you got the tickets means that the KDC is happy; the only thing I
can think of at this point is bad V4 Kerberos configuration files (you
did set up the appropriate krb.conf and krb.trans files) or that the
srvtab is munged somehow.  

I can't think of any other theories to support the facts....
