   I recently installed the krb5-b5 distribution (solaris2.4 platform). I
followed all the rules for the initial database population with a few
principals, including trying to make the 'sample' application work.

However, I could not get any of the applications to work; all exited with
a "server not found in database" error, even though I had added the
principal and done the xst (in kdb5_edit).

I found at the bottom of the ksu.1 man page a reference to a principal
   host/hostname.domain@LOCAL.REALM

I added one to my database, and suddenly everything worked. Did I miss
this somewhere else (more obvious) in the documentation, or is this not
an intended effect? I found no other references to this principal.

I very much doubt adding that principal was related to making things
work. If fact, if you delete it using kdb5_edit, it's likely that they
will continue to work. I'm not sure what you changed, but it probably
wasn't related to that principal.
